Spotlight: Matt Johnston

February 19, 2009

Hi, folks! One of our goals here at the BjornBlog is to provide some insight on the inner workings of not just the Peggle Institute, but also PopCap Games. Recently I got a chance to sit down with the PopCapper largely responsible for the upcoming Peggle Dual Shot, Mr. Matt Johnston!

Bjorn Unicorn: Tell us what you do at PopCap, Matt.

Matt Johnston: I am a senior producer in the video game platforms group.

B: And what does that mean, exactly?

M: It means I take credit for the work that everybody else does.

B: Wow! So tell me about Peggle Dual Shot.

M: Well, as you know, Bjorn, this is being touted as the ultimate version of Peggle…

B: In your universe.

M: Well, in the marketing universe, not even in my universe. For me I think that the first version of Peggle is the ultimate version, the pure version, but um… the DS contains some new features. There’s the bonus undergrounds, the first time this has been seen, which is a pretty cool new feature where when you collect five stars by hitting pink pegs, the bonus underground opens up and becomes available to you, and there’s a whole new world of magic down there.

B: Sounds wonderful! Now, what’s your favorite Peggle level?

M: Ooooh… that’s a tough one. I’m gonna say… (long pause)... I kinda like “Working from Home,” not that many people like that one.  It’s the one with the river and the frog…

B: Yeah. That is a tough level. What do you like about it?

M: I like the background, and I think, you know, I like the simple motion. Moving targets are always good. But the whole concept of not having to come to work is probably the most appealing part of it.
